Almeida Projects & Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Language College
Page-to-Stage: Rosmersholm & The Crucible
From May to June 2008, the Almeida Projects team will be be working with 44 Year 10 GCSE Drama students from Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Language College on a residency project inspired by the Almeida Theatre's forthcoming production of Ibsen's Rosmersholm.
The Almeida Projects Team will devise and lead a series of script-based workshops culminating in a presentation at the Almeida Theatre.
Students are studying The Crucible as part of their GCSE course work, and this project aims to broaden their theatre knowledge by exploring parallels between two different texts. The residency will also explore methods used in bringing a piece of drama to life and develop students' skills assisting the transition of a play from page to stage.
Participants will watch the Almeida Theatre's production of Rosmersholm and take part in an introductory workshop relating to the show. They will then go on to work on excerpts from the script of Rosmersholm and The Crucible, exploring characterisation and parallel themes, most notably the Nietzschean concept of ‘God is Dead’ – Rosmer has lost his faith and struggles in justifying his belief in Christian morality in its absence; and John Proctor recites "God Is Dead" towards the end of The Crucible. They will spend time rehearsing the excerpts with professional directors, and the final presentation will be a sharing of this work.
