Almeida Projects, Tiata Fahodzi and Islington Arts & Media School

Tiata Explored

June - July 2008

To coincide with the Almeida Theatre's Summer Festival event, Tiata Delights, the Almeida Projects team alongside Tiata Fahodzi will be leading an exciting series of script development workshops, working with 40 Year 10 students from Islington Arts & Media School.

Tiata Delights is a week-long new-writing residency, with British African Theatre Company Tiata Fahodzi, part of takes this year’s Almeida Summer Festival.  The residency will fill the theatre with a vast company of actors, covering Ghana & Nigeria and illuminating the exciting and heart-rending links which fuse Britain with Africa.  Six new plays by established and emerging African playwrights resident in the UK will be presented for the first time in performance readings underscored with live music integral to the African story-telling experience.

Working with a director from Almeida Projects and one of the Tiata Delights writers, students will have the opportunity to explore the themes, ideas and characters in plays from the Tiata Delights season.  By focusing on extracts from the text and bringing them to life through role play and improvisation, they will provide a young, and fresh perspective on the work in development.  Participants will also be invited to come and see one of the Tiata Delights shows during the festival.  Students will go on to create their own theatrical responses to the scripted work.  This will culminate in a presentation at the Almeida Theatre in the middle of July, to which the Tiata Delights writers will be invited.
