WORK PLACEMENTS FAQS

Should I apply for a work placement?

A work placement at Almeida Theatre will suit anyone interested in a career in theatre / arts administration with a specific idea of the role they would like to work in the future. A work placement will be primarily focused in one department. We do not offer placements in the rehearsal room.

How old do I have to be?

Applicants must be over 18 due to the Almeida’s Child Protection Policy.

What are the entry requirements?

Please check the department criteria carefully before applying as it can vary. Generally speaking most of the work placements are open to those with a keen interest in the arts, regardless of educational background or employment history.

I am a university student doing a placement for my course. How do I apply?

All work placements must reach the eligibility and criteria of the relevant department, please check carefully before you apply. Work placement job descriptions can be downloaded on the main placements page. Include a covering letter with details of your course, placement requirements and tutor contact details.

Do I need to inform my college / university?

If you are still at college or university you will need a signed permission form from your tutor agreeing to release you from your course for the dates we have agreed if you are applying for a work placement during your term time.

How long does a placement last?

Placements may be part time and may last from 2 weeks to 3 months depending on availability. Stage management and wardrobe placements are full time, please check with the departments for further information.

Will there be an interview?

Yes. If we are able to offer you a placement, we will arrange an interview time and tour of the building. We will email or telephone you to let you know the outcome of the interview. If you are accepted for a placement, further details of the placement and the start date will be confirmed.

How much will I be paid?

This is an unpaid position. A contribution towards lunch and travel expenses will be provided. Please see the relevant section on the placement page for the current amounts.

What hours will I work?

As a producing theatre your hours will be dictated by job description of the placements. For those placements that are office based the hours are generally 10am – 6pm with an hour for lunch, a minimum of 2 days per week,

What will I be doing?

Please see the relevant job description on the main placements page.

How do I apply?

Please download the work placement description for the relevant department and follow the instructions given on the main placements page.

I am living outside of the EU

Due to the recent changes in immigration procedures if you are a non EU resident you will need to demonstrate that you have permission to enter the country and have the ability to support yourself during your stay in the UK. The Almeida is unable to support any visa, travel and accommodation costs.

Why do you no longer offer school work experience?

We get far more requests for work experience than we could possibly accommodate. Our Projects Department already offer great opportunities for local young people aged 15-21 through the Young Friends Scheme, it seems sensible to concentrate our efforts there. More information is available here.
