Big Hits

Big Hits is on a mission to teach you self-improvement. To help you completely improve yourself. That way you can be better in the world. Are you ready?

Acclaimed young company GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN have worked extensively across Europe, creating work that plays in the gap between theatre and live art. Their show Big Hits (Soho Theatre Studio) will turn the music up high and blast its heart right out for you.

“Funny, sexy, frightening, essential. I urge you to see it…a genuine groundbreaker.”
Mark Ravenhill

“Our work has at its core a game of subverting the social and architectural structures of theatre. To play this game properly the work needs to knock up against the traditional stage and a 'legitimate' cultural context. The Almeida has both of these, and the Almeida Festival has stood out as fearless and enthusiastic in supporting this by programming Big Hits into its auditorium. In our experience, the kind of support and context being offered here is the best we have received outside mainland Europe, where contemporary performance festivals are more common.” Hester Chillingworth, Artistic Director, GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN

GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN
is a London and Essex based performance company formed in 2008, making cross-genre work that plays with glory, endurance, artifice and the banal. We also curate the work of other artists. GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVANʼs work has been shown across London at venues including National Theatre Studio (SPILL 2011), Soho Theatre, The Roundhouse and Battersea Arts Centre, as well as on national tours and at live art events such as Hatch (Nottingham) and emergency (Manchester).

The company were Platformed Artists at Arnolfini (Bristol) during 2011, where we were commissioned to respond to the venueʼs 50th Anniversary theme “The Apparatus of Culture”. Internationally, the companyʼs work has been shown at Festival Belluard Bollwerk International (Switzerland), ANTI Festival of Contemporary Art (Finland), PACT (Germany), Noorderzon Festival (Netherlands), Junge Hunde Festival (Denmark) and Salzburg International Summer Academy of Fine Arts. GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN is a 2012/13 Artsadmin Associate Artist and an Associate Company at the Department of Drama, Theatre and Performance at Roehampton University, London.
