I am pleased to announce that the Almeida Festival returns this July, bringing to our unique space innovative, daring and entertaining theatre from this country and around the world. The celebrated poet and performer Inua Ellams takes us on a journey beyond the theatre walls and back at the theatre there will be performances from Custom/Practice and the award-winning companies Inspector Sands and Lost Dog. We welcome back Greyscale and New York-based The TEAM and our own Young Friends of the Almeida will be taking inspiration from the Almeida’s 2011/12 Season to generate a brand new play for young people with playwright Rebecca Prichard to be directed by the Gate Theatre’s Artistic Director Natalie Abrahami.
Following this, I am thrilled to be directing King Lear as part of the World Shakespeare Festival. In the title role is the Tony and Olivier award-winning Jonathan Pryce. The full run of performances goes on sale to the public on 1 May but we are pleased to offer one final opportunity to our Members to book in advance for Shakespeare’s great tragedy.
Concluding the Season is the World Premiere of The Dark Earth and the Light Sky, from the hugely talented British dramatist Nick Dear. A beautiful reimagining of the life of early twentieth-century poet Edward Thomas and his relationship with the iconic American poet Robert Frost, the production will be directed by the great Sir Richard Eyre.
I hope you can join us for this exciting season of work.
