production information

In March 2021, Almeida Participation put an open call out for emerging young Black writers to be a part of Anthem, an initiative to support and encourage aspiring writers inspired by Lolita Chakrabarti's play Hymn

11 writers were then selected to be a part of a cohort of writers to receive more focused support. Over the last year, the writers have developed their work receiving mentoring, notes and feedback from dramaturg Ola Animashawun. The final phase has seen the 11 plays benefit from a research and development process led by directors - Abi Falase, Ewa Dina and Germma Orleans-Thompson, and the Anthem Young Company who have been specially recruited for this project.

As a celebration of their work, Anthem Live features extracts of their plays which will be performed in front of an audience for the first time.

Alexander Uzoka is a 21 year old writer and actor, born to an Italian mother and a Nigerian father but raised in East London. He is currently in his final year on the BA Acting course at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, preparing for the title role in The Last Days of Judas Iscariot by Stephen Adly Guirgis. Writing has become a big part of Alexander’s life since Covid hit in March 2020, where he used it as a means of dealing with all the mess that was going on around him. The devastating murder of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement acted as the catalyst for his obsession to create his own work. It led to creating one of his proudest writing achievements to date; a project surrounding the theme of identity in which he put together his own righting inspired by various people, authors and playwrights, as well as including their work. Performances of which can be found of YouTube. However, moving forward from this, Alexander wanted to go bigger. He wanted to write a play but lacked the necessary tools to do so. And in came Anthem!
